ELAINE M. BOETTCHER Elaine M. Boettcher Elaine M. Boettcher, age 92, of Merrill, formerly of the Town of Pine River, Lincoln County, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill. Elaine was born May 1, 1918, in Merrill, daughter of the late Alfred and Minnie (Sell) Kohnke. She married Alfred E. Boettcher on April 30, 1938. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1957. Elaine had dairy farmed in the Town of Pine River. She had also worked as a secretary at the former Pine River Co-op. Elaine was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Merrill. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Victor) Prueser, of Cottage Grove, MN, and Joylyn (David) Meyer, of Merrill; five grandchildren, Lyn (Larry) Nutzman, of Cottage Grove, MN, Mark Prueser, of Brainerd, MN, Brent (Jennifer) Prueser, of Brainerd, MN, Jody Meyer, of Merrill, and Jeremie (Renee) Meyer, of De Pere; three great-grandchildren, Jena Nutzman and Derek Nutzman, both of Cottage Grove, MN, and Julia Meyer, of De Pere; and one brother, Elroy E. Kohnke, of Merrill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; her grandson, Jonathon Meyer; two sisters, Betty Hahn, and Phyllis (Arnold) Schiller; one sister-in-law, Virginia Kohnke; and one brother-in-law, Ted Boettcher. A Private Graveside Service will take place at a later date. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements. PETER E. GIERL Peter E. Gierl Peter E. Gierl died Friday, August 27, 2010 at his home in the Town of Maine. He was born July 19, 1932 in Colby, WI. He Graduated from Colby High School in 1950. He entered the Army in 1952 after farming a short while with his uncles. During the Korean War, he was wounded in action. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and CIB. After his discharge from the Army, he worked in Wisconsin and Illinois for a while and then moved to Seattle, WA, where he spent most of his life working on construction. Peter is survived by six sisters, one brother, three step-sisters and three step-brothers. At his request his body was donated to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. There will be no services and his ashes will be scattered in Puget Sound near Seattle. Taps will be played by his brother-in-law at that time. The Waid Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. |

MICHAEL G. PATRAW Michael G. Patraw, 57, of Merrill, died Monday August 30, 2010 at Cady Home in Wausau. He was born May 22, 1953 in Rice Lake to the late Darrell & Lorraine (Thorson) Patraw. Mike had traveled with the carnival for many years and had also worked in Chicago selling Christmas trees and pumpkins He previously managed the Timber Inn Motel in Phillips. Mike loved to socialize at large gatherings, and he was always making new friends. He also enjoyed cooking, fishing, appreciating the outdoors but especially loved being with his family and grandchildren. Survivors include four children: Theresa Anthoney, Chris (Heather Hulke) Patraw, all of Merrill, Michael (Savannah) Patraw Jr, North Carolina, and Katie Heisler, Wausau; his companion: Sue Addington, Merrill; sister: Mary Ellen (Dwaine) Erickson, Superior, WI; brother: Steve (Jill) Patraw, Merrill; three grandchildren: |
Ashley, Thomas & Sawyer; one great-grandson: Caiden; nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Darrell & Lorraine Patraw; two sisters: Jean Knutson and Carol Patraw; and three brothers: William, Thomas and Mark Patraw. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice at Kennedy Park and Cady Home. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 3, 2010 at 5:00 PM at Waid Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home. | DUANE LEONARD 'FINNER' OSNESS Duane Leonard “Finner” Osness, 74, of Wausau, formerly of Merrill died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Colonial Manor in Wausau. Finner was born July 25, 1936 to the late Henry and Bernice (Duranceau) Osness in Merrill. Finner was a 1954 graduate of Merrill Senior High School. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy & served at Great Lakes Naval Station for 2 years traveling the United States playing baseball, basketball and football for the Navy Team. Finner joined the Navy to see the world but only got as far as Hawaii where he spent 2 years playing ball and where he also ate enough pineapple to last the rest of his life. He later played semi-pro baseball for the Merrill Rangers and had also tried out for the New York Giants. Finner played ball in the Lincoln County League where he threw his last pitch, breaking his arm, thus ending his baseball career. He was a foreman at Weinbrenner Shoe Company and later was a counselor at Lincoln Hills Boy’s School until he became disabled and was forced to retire. Finner was involved in forming the Merrill Commission on Aging and was Past-President of the Merrill Softball League. He was a devoted Packer, Brewer and Badger fan as well as an avid hunter & fisherman. Finner was also a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and the Golden “M” Club. Survivors include three daughters: Connie Osness, Teri (Mark) Kolosso, both of Appleton, and Lori Van Gompel, of Kimberly; one sister: Judy (Alfred) Elliott, of Merrill; five grandchildren: Sheyanne, Shawn, Lieah, Karie and Tony; one great-grand daughter: Alexis; and one nephew: Tom (Shelly) Rahlf, of Merrill. He was preceded in death by his parents, companion, Patricia Freeman, and brother-in-law Milan Rahlf. The family would like to thank the staff at Colonial Manor for the wonderful compassionate care they showed Finner and his family during his illness. Also Dr. Kris Lahren and his staff at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Dr. Kay Gruling and Pastor Jeff Martinson for his frequent visits and the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church prayer chain. Services were held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jeff Martinson officiated. Burial will follow at Merrill Memorial Park.
